Today, a very special guest came and talked to students at BASE in grades K-3 about recycling and working in a greenhouse. Her name is Jane, and she is the greenhouse caretaker at Wheaton College. We had a lot of fun, Jane made a big mess, and to everyone's surprise - none of it was trash! After some education in recycling, reusing, re-purposing, and even composting, we even cleaned up!
Then, later on, Jane did a special presentation for just the Second Graders. We learned that plants can even recycle themselves! Using materials that Jane brought us, we replanted cuttings from a jungle plant just by putting the ends into some soil. Students could take their plants home, and Jane gave everyone some instructions for helping to care for the plants - let us know how yours are doing! We also kept one for our classroom, so we'll keep you posted on its progress! Here are some photos of us doing our planting:
Many thanks to Jane for visiting us and sharing her knowledge, we'll be sure to put all of our recycling knowledge to good use!
